Openroad Motorcycle Tours is a family-run business based in Mangawhai, New Zealand. It's operated by my parents, and I've been involved in developing their web presence.

I initially built the original version of their website about 4 years ago. While it was functional, it became clear that in the modern age of travel, it needed some TLC and improvements.

While working part-time on Openroad alongside my main job as a Lead Engineer of Crew at me&u, I undertook a complete rebuild of the website and backend. The goal was to create a fully custom tour and route builder that would streamline operations for my parents.

Custom Tour Builder

The new platform allows my parents to mix and match different routes that they know work well together, providing a seamless experience across the site. All tours now have consistent data for each leg, which simplifies tour creation and allows for quick changes if accommodation is not available at the usual location and another stop is required.

Booking Management

The platform includes functionality to manage bookings and track the bikes available on each tour along with tour dates. This comprehensive system addresses the issues my parents faced with the previous version and significantly improves their tour management experience.

Tech Stack

For this rebuild, I utilized a modern and efficient tech stack:

Supabase for the database
Resend for sending confirmation emails on bookings
NextJS to build out the frontend
Tailwind for styling
Vercel for hosting

Impact

This complete rebuild has addressed all the pain points my parents experienced with the previous system. It has improved the experience of managing tours for them, allowing for more flexibility and efficiency in their operations. The new platform not only enhances their ability to create and modify tours but also provides a better experience for their customers, contributing to the growth and success of their motorcycle tour business.
